Who on earth came up with the crazy idea of inventing social media?”

The aim of the Lève Les Yeux workshops is to help young people understand just how much excessive screen time – which is constantly on the rise – is damaging their health, their ability to concentrate and, more broadly, their social connections.

These issues, which are now well documented, are becoming increasingly recognised by the public and politicians alike, as evidenced by recent legislative initiatives aimed at better regulating the use of social media and smartphones by minors.

During the workshops organised in Nice throughout the school year, the team at Lève Les Yeux asked young people about these measures. The reactions, overwhelmingly negative, were well-founded:

– They belong to a generation born with screens

– The law/reform prohibits but does not provide an alternative solution

– Today, for them, being part of society – that is to say, social connection – happens through screens

– Indeed, screens even help to resolve social problems that cannot be resolved in any other way…

As the discussion progressed, the speakers managed to make them understand that social media deliberately exploits the weaknesses of the human brain: it relies on mechanisms designed to capture and hold attention by exploiting certain cognitive vulnerabilities.

The issue of social media affects everyone, but certain sections of the population are more vulnerable than others. For example, screen time is 1.5 to 2 times higher in working-class communities.

From an educational perspective, the consequences are a cause for concern. Concentration works like a muscle; the less you exercise it, the weaker it becomes. Consequently, social media – and in particular its fragmented content, known as ‘snack content’ – poses a threat to young people’s attention span and their ability to think deeply.

That is why the work of associations such as Lève les Yeux is essential. The task is challenging but necessary, and the Jacques Martel Foundation was delighted to continue its commitment to supporting the association for the second year running.

To mark Sustainable Gastronomy Day, the Jacques Martel Foundation is delighted to announce the two winners of its ‘Le goût des territoires’ call for projects.

Launched last March, this call for projects aims to support those who keep our food heritage alive, pass on local skills and promote more sustainable eating habits.

Among the many applications received, two projects particularly caught the selection committee’s attention due to their ability to foster a dialogue between heritage, knowledge transfer and public awareness.

‘Le Crabe bleu’ – Les Amis de la Presqu’île de Giens

Led by the association Les Amis de la Presqu’île de Giens, this project focuses on a species now well established along the Mediterranean coast: the blue crab. Through awareness-raising initiatives and culinary promotion, the association aims to introduce the general public to the issues surrounding this species whilst exploring its potential as a local food resource.

‘My Edible Neighbourhood’ – Méditerranée 2000 & JVS

Through ‘My Edible Neighbourhood’, the two organisations aim to reconnect local residents with their food by creating and running urban vegetable gardens. The project aims to enable residents to grow traditional and seasonal vegetables locally, whilst raising their awareness of environmental issues and the benefits of a healthy and sustainable diet.

Taste as a living heritage

Although they differ in their approach, these two projects share the same conviction: our culinary heritage is alive. It is built day by day through the use of local produce, the skills associated with it, and the bonds it creates between local people.

The Jacques Martel Foundation is proud to support these initiatives, which help to preserve, pass on and showcase the flavours that shape the identity of our regions.

We would like to congratulate both winners, as well as all the project leaders who responded to this call for proposals. Their commitment is a testament to the vitality of those working across the country to promote sustainable, local and meaningful food.

Being the parent of a sick child often means becoming a carer on a daily basis. It is a vital commitment, but not without consequences. Fatigue, stress, anxiety and isolation: numerous studies show that the role of carer can have a significant impact on parents’ health and well-being.

The recent unanimous adoption of a bill aimed at protecting and supporting parents of children with cancer, a serious illness or a disability, reflects a growing awareness of this reality. After all, looking after carers is also a way of looking after the people they care for.

As part of the Jacques Martel Foundation’s mission, we firmly believe that caring for sick children also involves supporting their immediate family and friends.

That is why we support the work carried out by the LEA association, which offers families moments of relief and togetherness. These special moments help to strengthen family relationships, break the cycle of isolation, and reconnect with others as well as with oneself, far from the pressures of daily life and the demands of medical treatment.

Once again this year, the Jacques Martel Foundation helped organise two key events.

🎼 At the Nice Opera House, the young carers received a personalised welcome from the Head of the Youth Programme, to whom we extend our warmest thanks. A specially tailored tour, in a calm and reassuring environment, allowed them to explore behind the scenes at the venue and enjoy the performance of “Peter and the Wolf” in the best possible conditions.

🐬 Another event that has become a must-attend: the boat trip organised off the coast of Sanary-sur-Mer to spot cetaceans. Young and old alike were able to share a day out of the ordinary, surrounded by nature and the ocean, to recharge their batteries and find new energy, together.

Because a supported parent is a parent who is more available for their child, these moments of respite are a vital tool for maintaining the balance of families facing illness.

The Jacques Martel Foundation is proud to support LEA in this vital mission: to offer sick children and their loved ones moments of comfort, togetherness and hope.

Behind each of our missions — protecting the oceans, educating the youngest members of society, supporting sick children and their families, promoting sustainable food systems, and preserving our heritage — lies a single ambition: to protect and pass on the future by placing people at the heart of our commitments.

To mark World Oceans Day on 8 June, the Jacques Martel Foundation supported a waste collection initiative on the banks of the Frayère in Cannes, organised by the CSIL (Conseil Scientifique des Iles de Lérins) and carried out by staff from the company Aromatech.

This was also an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms behind marine pollution and the issues associated with it.

To begin with, it is important to note that nearly 80% of the waste found in the sea originates on land and is carried there via rivers. Taking action on rivers therefore contributes directly to the preservation of the oceans.

It is important to realise that the large pieces of waste visible on riverbanks or along the coast are, in fact, only the tip of the iceberg, and every piece of waste collected before it reaches the sea helps to limit pollution, the effects of which accumulate over time.

Plastic, in particular, never completely disappears. Under the influence of the sun, wind and friction, it gradually breaks down into increasingly smaller particles; these are known as microplastics and then nanoplatics. Some become so fine that they can no longer be separated from the water. These nanoplastics are then ingested by many marine organisms that are unable to distinguish them from natural particles. This phenomenon fuels the processes of bioaccumulation and biomagnification: the particles and associated substances gradually move up the food chain, with increasingly high concentrations in the predators at the top of the chain.

These issues are particularly acute in the Mediterranean. Although it accounts for only around 1% of the world’s ocean surface area, it is home to nearly 10% of known marine biodiversity, including many endemic species such as Posidonia. With nearly 200 million people living along its shores, the pressures on this exceptional ecosystem are immense.

After an hour of collecting, the bags quickly filled up and the participants were able to see the extent of the pollution, which is not immediately obvious at first glance. Packaging, shards of glass, cigarette butts, tyres, fishing nets, garden hoses, all manner of containers… from the tiniest piece of plastic to much larger items, the variety of waste collected serves as a stark reminder of how much the natural environment remains exposed to human activity.

Protecting the oceans is at the heart of the Jacques Martel Foundation’s mission. Every awareness-raising and fundraising initiative helps to improve understanding of the issues surrounding marine pollution and to encourage more environmentally friendly behaviour.

A big thank you to the teams at Aromatech and CSIL for their commitment during this morning’s event, which was all about raising awareness and taking action.

In September 2025, we presented the first phase of a promising project in Madagascar.

Supporting the Wildlife Care Madagascar association, the Jacques Martel Foundation has embarked on a multifaceted project aimed at supporting local communities – particularly children. It focuses on key issues: health, training and the promotion of local skills, and is fully in line with the Foundation’s missions: to promote access to healthy and sustainable food for all, and to support the education of young people.

Seven months after its launch, significant progress has already been made: the plots have been prepared, training in gardening has been provided, trial crops have been planted, and a well has been built.

As regards the training aspect, four people have already been trained. This programme, run by a local centre, teaches farming practices that respect biodiversity and the soil. This is a relevant approach to the sustainable conservation of resources and to ensuring a more secure future for generations to come. The trainers emphasised the importance of respecting endemic species during land clearing and also taught the benefits of mulching in a hot climate.

The planning of experimental crops also illustrates this commitment to adapting to the local context. In the middle of the rainy season, the team focused on four vegetable and fodder crops with high water requirements: maize, cassava, lowland rice and bambara beans. All grown using permaculture methods.

From April onwards, tomatoes will be planted. Indeed, the lower temperatures of the dry season provide favourable conditions for the pollination of many vegetable crops.

Summary in pictures

The Jacques Martel Foundation is particularly proud of this project, which has made remarkable progress and which helps to empower local communities and work with them to build sustainable solutions for future generations. The impact is therefore not solely agricultural: it is also social, as it fosters a collective spirit, develops skills, creates seasonal employment and boosts the confidence of those on the ground in their ability to produce, learn and pass on knowledge.

Further initiatives are still underway, which is very encouraging. A wonderful collaboration has been forged.

In 2026, the theme of World Water Day is ‘Water and Equality’.

This theme resonates particularly strongly with a project that is important to us and which we have chosen to support, alongside the charity Sens Solidaire, which the Jacques Martel Foundation is supporting for the third consecutive year.

This is a Franco-Senegalese project, run between schools in Nice and schools in Casamance, entitled ‘Access to water and food: understanding their vital link’.

This project aims to raise pupils’ awareness of the fundamental role of water in health, hygiene and nutrition. It also offers practical solutions! Finally, it serves as a reminder that access to drinking water remains a major issue of equality, and it is clear that we are not all equal.

The project has several components:

– Raising awareness of water quality and food safety issues through presentations and educational group activities

– Creating vegetable gardens,

– Installing two ‘Nanoaid’ kits for water purification and disinfection (vegetables, soil, hands, surfaces, wounds).

– Running workshops on water and hygiene,

– Distribution of water containers to Senegalese schoolchildren

The first Nanoaid unit has been installed at Cagnout School. Until now, pupils at this school had been drinking untreated water, which was the cause of many illnesses linked to unsafe water.

Tippy Taps – simple handwashing stations – have also been made and installed in strategic locations around the playground to make it easier for the children to wash their hands 💛

At another school in Casamance – Pointe Saint Georges Primary School – individual water containers were handed out to pupils as part of a workshop on good hygiene practices at school and the importance of staying hydrated.

Water is the first, invisible ingredient in our diet.

Without good-quality water, there can be no healthy agriculture, no sustainable fishing, and no reliable food supply chain. Protecting water means protecting the very basis of what we eat.

‘Peer violence prevents children from growing up peacefully and expressing their full physical, psychological, intellectual and social potential.’

This statement, found on the website of the Marion la Main Tendue association, is in line with the values of the Jacques Martel Foundation.

The association’s mission is to prevent, take action against and combat bullying at school and among peers, which is a major obstacle to children’s development and success.

It is therefore with great enthusiasm and hope that the Jacques Martel Foundation announces its first partnership with the Marion la main tendue association, as part of its mission to support education, and more specifically with the aim of combating school dropout.

Successive surveys show the extent to which mental wellbeing among secondary school pupils has deteriorated in recent years.

▶️ The website santepubliquefrance.fr reports that more than half of secondary school pupils report symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, nervousness or irritability, which are signs of persistent ill-being.

These are all warning signs that can lead to students dropping out of school.

Our recent meeting with the association convinced us of the harm caused by silence around these issues and how important it is to take action to support children and school staff.

The partnership that has just been signed focuses specifically on combating bullying and cyberbullying, two issues with serious consequences for both children and the adults around them.

This ambitious project, initiated by the Cannes Foundation as part of its CARA program, includes workshops and meetings designed to raise awareness among pupils and teaching staff in order to prevent bullying and school dropout. This systemic approach will benefit the entire educational community in Cannes’ primary and secondary schools.

By partnering with Marion la Main Tendue, the Jacques Martel Foundation reaffirms its belief that awareness, listening and commitment are essential levers for enabling every child to grow, learn and develop in a safer and more humane school environment.

It was with immense joy that, on 10 December 2025, the Jacques Martel Foundation brought together nearly 190 people, half of whom were children, for its now traditional Christmas party.

Young and old alike were swept away by the magic of Christmas, thanks to the two actors from the Compagnie Sens En Éveil, who performed their show ‘Un jouet pour Noël’ (A Toy for Christmas), bringing laughter and wonder to the audience.

Once again this year, we were warmly welcomed by the municipality of Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne in the beautiful Terre de Siagne space. Thank you 🙏

And since the children had been very behaved, each one received a copy of the latest issue of the scientific comic book ‘Les animaux marins’ (Marine Animals), published by Bamboo Edition, whom we would like to thank.

Finally, we had the pleasure of sharing a convivial moment with young and old alike, enjoying chouquettes and Christmas chocolate in a joyful and festive atmosphere. 🎄

A big thank you to all the participants and partners who helped make this enchanting interlude such a beautiful moment.

The Jacques Martel Foundation team wishes you a very Merry Christmas.

Before European Waste Reduction Week 2025 comes to an end, we are delighted to share a list of best practices for a transatlantic race with as little waste and plastic as possible. It has been designed and produced by the No Plastic In My Sea association, whose aim is to combat plastic pollution and its environmental impact at source. We are delighted to be able to support them in their efforts.

At the request of the Jacques Martel Foundation, the information sheet was distributed to all crews who set sail on Sunday in the ARC 2025 transatlantic race, including the crew led by Benoit Martel aboard Lazyjack 2, as part of the “Objectif Océan” project.

👉 Discover & support the ‘Objectif Océan’ project

This is a reminder that reducing waste, especially plastic, is an ongoing challenge, even in the middle of the Atlantic. Every action counts, and everyone can do their part.

Many thanks to No Plastic In My Sea for producing the fact sheet, and to ARC for distributing it.
